chemotherapy

Postby oberlisa » Fri Dec 04, 2009 7:24 pm

When cancer starts to spread throughout the body, one course of treatment is chemotherapy? One very obvious effect of chemotherapy is that people generally lose all of their hair a few weeks after the drugs enter their system. Why do you think chemotherapy drugs cause a person's hair to fall out?

Hi Oberlisa,

generally chemotherapy affects hairloss as it reacts on the rapid dividing cells in the body which includes the scalp. Thus the scalp is not able to hold the hair follicle resulting to hairloss.

Today, not all chemotherapy will cause hair loss. There are some that may thin the hair. There are some that are inevitably causes hairloss. However, after treatment is completed, new hair will start to grow again within 3-6 months.

I hope the information helps.
